Mounted Police

History and administration of Mounted Police unit.

The Mounted Police unit, a symbol of Majesty of Kerala Police is housed in 1.14 acres of Government land at Kannettumukku, Thycaud, Thiruvananthapuram District, only one of its kinds in entire Kerala Police.

The beginning of Mounted Police Unit in the State can be traced back to 1880; His Highness the Maharaja of Travancore paved the way and known as "The Rajapramukhas Body Guards" till the Independence of the Nation from the British rule. It was situated in the Body Guard Square at Palayam. There was an array of horse breeds including foreign breeds, which were considered as a symbol of pride used for protection from enemies and pulling of chariots of the royal families. Later the unit was named as "Palace Guard" and Brig: W.D. Ketchen laid the foundation stone of Body Guard Square, Palayam.

The present Mounted Police Unit was established in the year 1961 vide G.O (MS)508/Home Dated 14/11/1961 and continued at Cantonment Camp (Body Guard Square), Palayam till 1981. Consequent to the construction of the assembly complex at Palayam, the unit was shifted to the present premises. Formerly horses were bought from Armed Forces stables or abroad with high pedigree and quality. Procurements were done in 1984, 1987 and 1999. In 2013 seven horses and in 2014 three horses were added to the strength.

There are 28 stables in Mounted Police Unit. The sanctioned strength of Horses is 35 and the present strength is 14. The Reserve Inspector, Mounted Police Unit is the controlling Officer under the Administrative control of the District Police Chief, Thiruvananthapuram City through Commandant, A R TVPM City at present.

The Unit has a Riding School for regular Parades and practices. The office and barracks are functioning in a two storied building in the unit campus for round the clock round the year close observation of the horses. Pedigreed retired thoroughbred race horses with good track records and Indian breed horses form the present troop. A full-fledged Farrier Unit and Kitchen also are part of this unit.

Bermuda grass, Horse Gram, Oats, Linseed, Wheat bran, Mineral Mixture and good quality water forms the routine feeding.

A Veterinary Hospital with a Veterinary Assistant Director and a Livestock Inspector for health care of horses is strength of this unit. Daily health monitoring with periodical detailed health checkup are done through this facility.

Routine Night patrolling occasionally lead by the District Police Chief Thiruvananthapuram City himself and Ceremonial parades in important social and religious functions make the unit dear to the public.
